Social Learning Reflection

Social Learning Theory is full of opportunities for growth and offers various approaches to not just learn, but also educate, facilitate, and instruct.  The first idea of social learning that comes to my mind is the three mechanisms: behavior, environment, and perceptions and the role each plays in learning and even our daily lives.  These Reciprocal Causations influence the learners experience while the environment influences their perceptions and even behaviors.  Us as humans learn a tremendous amount through observance of others behaviors while taking note of the outcome and consequences of those behaviors.  This is vicarious; allowing yourself to decide based off what you have observed in someone else while applying the deliberate decision-making process to either repeat the behavior / action or ignore it all together (personal agency).

Modeling is part of social learning.  Effective modeling represents competency, its prestigious and relevant to the one who is in observation; this is powerful.  As an example, modeling has influence over academics.  In cognitive modeling a student watching and observing how another student solves a problem is beneficial.  It helps with interpersonal skills by engaging in discussions, cooperating with others, and conducting collaborative learning.  This type of acquisition capitalizes on other’s knowledge, resources, and skills thus allows for deeper learning with multiple perspectives.  It supports and leads to knowledge being created together rather than transmitted.  Group work, interactions, discussions, sharing with peers, active listening, and problem solving are all supportive collaborative instruction techniques.

Another great example of the power of social learning is apprenticeship.  A learner that is part of an apprenticeship is basically in practice with a subject matter expert overseeing, coaching, assessing, motivating, modeling, and providing feedback through the instruction.  This style of learning usually involves a significant amount of supervision, progressive practice, and scaffolding.  Additionally, social learning has influence over self-efficacy, especially as it pertains to criticism and encouragement along with observational learning which includes attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation in a professional manner.

Social Learning Theory offers multiple avenues of learning, instruction, and behavioral change.  Learning occurs through observation of rewards and punishments with vicarious reinforcement which supports self-regulation and growth.  The instruction focus is on general concepts, while the learners come together with different backgrounds and experiences to finalize a thought and generate learning.  Finally, social learning theory allows individuals to abstract information from the behaviors and actions of others, make informed decisions about what behaviors they choose to adopt and use their individual adjustments to adapt to the environment they are in.

A lot can be said of the Social Learning that took place during the development of this particular knowledge base. As classmates, we all participated in video conferences, discussions boards, group chats, email chains, group work and through it all we shared our thoughts, opinions, and even suggestions with one another. Communication, collaboration, and coordinations were all routine activities during this semester as we assisted one another with the development of our knowledge bases, use of technology, and deeper meaning and understanding of the readings, tutorials and other courseware. The end product was meaning making and a conducive educational environment that we developed.
